please help me,New chicken person DLM

We don't put any in our run but I know people put sand in their run. They use some use fine sand and others use fiver bed sand. Sand can have three purposes, dusting, litter, and grit for their digestion. Welcome and good luck to you.

I'm new here and still learning myself but before we added on to our coop ours was the same I think as what you are referring to. We did the deep litter method inside the coop with pine shavings and put sand in the little run underneath. I found it much easier to clean and the sand kept their little feet clean. I would use a cat litter scoop to sift the sand of poop about twice a week. I would spot clean the shavings the same way and then once a week i would rake all out and replace with fresh shavings. The sand works nicely in keeping them dry if it rains a lot. Seems the sand dries out faster and the run doesnt get muddy.

Hi guys im a new member,my name is kiesha from the uk,I have 3 chooks 2 hens (cream legbar&light sussex) I also have 1 rooster cream legbar.
There only 4 weeks old so I have them indoors on and off heat.
My concern is the deep litter method I have a shop bought coop for 3-4 chickens the type with the house and nesting box then run attached underneath
Do I fill the run with pine shavings and keep tossing it and adding fresh shavings once in a while? Or do I put nothing in the run,do i use deepmethod with pine shavings in the house under the perch and toss and add when it gets too poopy? Do I use a diferant material in nesting box when the girls start laying? Im so confused....Also does anyone bring there rooster indoors at night to keep down the noise for neighbours? Thanks in advance xxx
I use the DLM and we just add pine shavings when needed to the coop. We put nothing on the ground in the run. your chicks will like to get in the dirt and take dust baths, scratch and hunt things to eat. We use pine shavings in the nest boxes. check out poop boards. we use them and it helps keep the coop clean. Poop boards are placed under where your chicks roost and catch the poop when they are sleeping. keeps the poop off the floor. there is more info on here about poop boards. we keep about 2 to 3 inches litter in the coop (5 to 7 cm for you) then when we clean, we just have to scoop out the poopie balls and add litter to the coop. some like it some don't. it works for us. Sand is a good choice if it is readily available. sand works like kitty litter. have a happy chicky day and glad to have you. welcome

Wow thank you all its so nice to speak to other chicken owners im the only one I know Lol,
Well I already filled the run with hay weeks ago (Blame excitement) I think ill just leave that till it composes and hope for the best sand is easy to get hold of so ill switch to that eventually,Or should I just take out the hay and do that now? We have a poop board with pine chips in,and ill go for the straw\hay someone mentioned for the nest....Phewwww....Oh I got a lil silkie chick today I need to sloooow down I started with two in the space of 2 weeks thats doubled hehe

It's fine, I put some down in the run where the soil was hard clay. Now it's real usable soil!
