Hi everyone,

I've noticed one of my chickens has been limping and I'm having trouble telling what it is. I looked at her feet and she does have a pink lump on her right foot and there are some pink patches on the other (which she has always seemed to have). Also the bottom of both her feet seem to be quite swollen. I'm not sure if it is bumblefoot or something else because I can't see a prominent scab. Is it possibly the early stages of bumble foot? (I've attached some photos below)
I've been bathing both her feet in epson salts, then rubbing them with Vaseline and wrapping them in bandages but she is still limping around :( .
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's the cause of the limp but it may be stemming from scaly leg mites. One of my girls had/has a severe case of scaly leg mites (previous owner wasn't aware of the problem) to the point that I thought she also had bumblefoot but the swelling has gone down with just the treatment of the mites.

Thanks for replying. It's hard to know what the real problem is. The treatment seems to be working. She was walking a lot faster today but still has a little limp. I also started to put some Betadine on the red patches which are starting to disappear now but her feet are still swollen on the bottom.
Hope your hen recovers too!

Would you be able to share the treatment for scaley leg mites? Thank you!

Hi @RJH Welcome To BYC!
Sorry you're having troubles.

I appears that the OP stated how they were treating the feet in the first post (quoted above).
Vaseline, Castor Oil, etc. will smother Scaly Leg Mites. If you wish to share some photos of your bird's legs that may be helpful as well.

Hi everyone, thanks for replying.
I think so far it has worked. Not much has really changed since I last posted 😕. Those reddy pink patches have pretty much gone away but she's still limping although it isn't as bad as before because she can walk a lot faster and even run around.

Hi RJH,

I've been bathing both her feet in epson salts in a bucket of warm water while holding her in a towel so she doesn't flap around. My chickens are quite tame and let me pick them up but I've heard wrapping them in a towel can help them relax and make them easier to hold.
Then I rub them with Vaseline and wrap them in bandages (I use some electrical tape to secure on the bandages so they don't unravel but I don't wrap her feet very tightly).

I hope your chook improves as well :)

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your replies. Her pinky red patches have seemed to fade and she can walk a lot faster and is even running a lot (before she wasn't walking very much and was often standing on one leg). I decided to stop applying the treatment for a few days to see how she was without it but she still has a little limp which hasn't seemed to become any worse or better.
Should I leave it a few more days or keep applying?

while you have her soaking in epsom salts get a toothbrush and gently scrub each time too lot of the scales come off . then after drying you can use your oils coconut oil is good too keep applying your oils everyday until limp is gone also keep a check on her and any other chickens you have oil them too

Can you get some updated photos of what her legs look like now?
