Please help. My duck is weak and can not walk.

I have posted another thread of this before, a week ago. My duck, a pekin, has been having alot of issues in the past 2 weeks. She loses her balance a lot, She never wants to walk, her eye looks really bad, it looks like it hurts her to walk. I have been posting, but no one has been responding. I ordered nutri drench yesterday, and its coming tomorrow. I fear that she might not be able to walk at all soon... Please help. Thank you.

I think she has an infection. If you can get her to a vet, do so.

If not, find some antibiotics and start them up right away.

I don't know if you need to separate her. You may want to, to be safe. I am making my best guess, without being able to see her (and without being a vet, myself, just a duck keeper).

It may be an eye infection, it could be a systemic infection, her ears could be involved.

Oh, that causes brain damage, right? Sorry for all the questions, i just need to know what can help her. the vet is not an option. What antibiotic should we look in to, and where can we get it.

Knowing the right antibiotic is a guess - I need to state that. There are some guides on which ones are most often used, but for each situation, in a perfect world we could test the bacteria and see which antibiotic kicks it best. But we don't have that.

Some of the antibiotics I have read about being used on ducks include Tylan, Duramycin and Baytril. That last one is most often prescription, I believe. Eyes can be greatly helped by rinsing with mild saline solution several times a day. Vetericyn makes an eye gel, over the counter. I would consider saline rinse and oral antibiotic. There are dosage tables telling how many mg of medicine per kg of weight of duck. So you'll need access to a good scale to know the proper weight, to figure out safe dosage.

If you know someone with a good baby scale, that should work.

I would go with brewer's yeast. Forgive me for using capital letters, but for anyone else who may casually look over this thread, NOT baking yeast, NOT winemaking yeast. Brewer's yeast is a nutritional supplement and it provides niacin and a few other vitamins.

Generally, folks who supplement with brewer’s yeast use a tablespoon per cup of food.

Ducklings need about three times the niacin chicks do. And some ducklings get leg problems or seizures if they don't have enough niacin.

If you cannot find the brewer's yeast, or if you happen to have (here come the capital letters again, please forgive me) PLAIN niacin - NOT no-flush, NOT timed release, then dissolve 150 mg niacin per gallon of water for the duckling’s drinking water.

Another approach is to use B Complex capsules, and use the B3 - niacin - levels as a guide. Again, 150 mg B3 per gallon of drinking water.


Keep the little one on the supplements for about 8 weeks.

Sometimes it only takes a few days to see improvement.

Started with the saline rinse. Ok, i also got the nutri drench. Does it come with a seal, just because mine did not. i just thought it was werid.
