I have done about 5 hatches with chickens with various results. I am an elementary librarian and do the hatches in the library. I was given 6 turkey eggs that had been sat on for about a week. I put them in the incubator right away and candled them about day 14. 5 out of 6 had a baby turkey inside- one was clearly empty so it was discarded. On Friday (day28) one started to pip but did not hatch until Saturday. When I went in to check it I noticed another had a small pip. That evening I went back and it seemed that the hole was a little larger but the hatched poult kept knocking into the eggs and turning them over. I decided it would be best to remove him and added water to the incubator to keep up humidity. I went back in today and it seems there has been no more progress. I took out the pipped egg and was going to help but noticed the membrane was dry and perhaps shrink wrapped. Feeling as if we're my own fault I needed to see if it were making progress. When I started peeling away the shell and membrane I noticed that the beak was tucked under it's wing.
My questions:
Did the hatched chick peck at the egg? How else could it have been pipped with the beak tucked in?
How come the others haven't hatched?
How long should I give the other 3 eggs?
How can I increase my hatch rate (last year with 18 chicken eggs 6 hatched. 5 roosters, 1 hen)?
Thanks for any help.
