In this hot weather be sure and watch for fly maggots. This is very disgusting but happens. The flies lay eggs in the wound and then the eggs hatch and the larva eat on the flesh. I had a yellow golden this happened to. I was trying to keep the maggots picked out with tweezers and finally went to the vet. The vet gave me some (help me out horse people) yellow horse salve - name starts with a N - Nitrofurazone maybe? Said to keep it slathered on the wound heavy where the flies couldn't get to it. It worked great and I know it is available at our local farm store. Neosporin would probably work also just be sure to keep it on pretty heavy.

My feed store has those feeders in red plastic now, maybe you could get one of those. They're not as sharp. I am going to throw my metal one away today, just because I see what happened to your sweet little chick.

Your chick looks very healthy in the picture, I'm sure it'll make it with you watching over it to keep away infection and maggots. Behavior is the number 1 thing I look for in how healthy an animal (or child) is. If it's eating, drinking, sleeping, pooping and interacting with other chicks it's ok. If it starts to mope around or starts laying around, stops eating or drinking, or if it was skittish before and now doesn't care if you pick it up, or its bright little eyes get dull, etc, then you have to start worrying about infection or illness. To me, yours looks fine in many ways.

Hi Everyone,
I wanted to update everyone to my chick and to let everybody know as of today my chick is still alive and loves to follow me everywhere in the garage. It's neck is healing and I have been keeping the ointment on it and yesterday I got another chick that hatched so my little guy will now have company other than the stuffed pheasant toy I bought for him so he could cuddle with that at night and the new chick also loves it.
Ps I DID THROW THE OTHER FEEDER AWAY AND ALSO WROTE TO THE COMPANY ABOUT THE HAZARDS OF THEIR FEEDERS!!! But as you can imagine no reply from them yet.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR PRAYERS THEY WORKED:D

great news..

I had one of those metal chick feeder bases too last spring in addition to 2 other plastic ones to rotate around, and I noticed then how sharp the inside edges were. I will never use that 1 again, and I will warn the feed stores not to sell them if they are that sharp. I'm glad your baby is doing okay. Keep us posted.

I don't use my metal feeders anymore do to the sharp under edge. I also use antibiotic ointment for every cut or injury that my chickens have ever had. Separate the bird from the others to keep it safe from being pecked until it has healed, keep injury as clean as possible, and apply the antibiotic ointment as often as needed to keep it coated until the site closes.

Some months back one of my EEs got her butt feathers completely peck off and ripped open her skin down to her meat. I did what I said above, and she is good as new. I don't have the money to take my chickens to the vet so I am always on my own. Good Luck and be patient.
