Hi everyone.
Theres a cyclone coming to Darwin. Its only expected to be category 2, but I bet that will blow my chickens away!
Can people tell me how they've delt with cyclones or severe storm with there chickens?
I have a flimsy small tool shed, or their house, which is a big wooden box or the house to put them in. I would rather not bring them in the house cause of thier big frequent poops, but will if need be. The bathroom is already full of the rest of my small farm. Can people reccommend which they think is best?
Thanks!!

Tie everything down the very best you can , make sure none are in a wet area (where water accumalates) , tie them pens down ..... as the sailor said tie down the hatches it's gonna blow .
The very best to You and Yours , be careful and take care of yourself in plenty of time ,
Shannon

100 km/h, ~60mph. Hmmm, how sturdy is their coop? If firmly implanted in the ground and with sufficient roof area you could try a `Wyoming tie-down', i.e., car/truck tires on roof. How many chooks would be in your house if it came to that?

I was thinking of the shower. they will probably be in there for 2 days though cause im freaking out and over-reacting. Its 3ks from the coast of Darwin now, going out to the sea for a bit, then coming back in tomorrow.
Tying downs a good idea... i will look into it. but dont know if i trust my handyman skills enough to keep them safe.
Thnks for your help guys!!

I would take cleaning up poo over losing my animals anyday. Get them in where it's safe or if you just can't then lock them up and tie them down as good and hard as you possibly can!

Hello Beski,

During TC Yasi I bought my chooks into the laundry. I covered the floor with newspaper, placed their food and water in there and they stayed safe n dry!! I let them back out the following day after most of the wind n rain had gone.
Clean up was as simple as rolling up the newspaper n tossing it out!! I found by putting them in the laundry they had more room to move...they didn't seem to sleep through the cyclone though!!

Goodluck n stay safe.

do you have a large dog crate you can put them in while in the house, thus reducing the spread of poop everywhere. I think I would have to take them in, esp. if you know the coop is not stable, we don't want you running out there during the storm trying to rescue them
