Hello,
We really need your help to identify the problem and try to find a solution for our poor hen.
We just got her yesterday (rescue) and today when I held her I noticed that she has a huge bump in the belly area (by the vent). Few minutes later I noticed that there was blood on her legs...it seems that the blood is dripping from the area, which now looks like a open sore. I don't know what it is or what to do, any ideas?
Thank you!

I don't know, but please make sure she is away from your other chickens. Especially as a rescue could be carrying all sorts of nasty stuff that could make your chickies sick. Make sure to wash hands well before handling the other chickens too.

Do you know anything about her history?

Cross Lanes!?! My grandparents lived in Zela, near Summersville!

If she is new to your flock then my guess is they probably did that to her. The vent area is the first place they go for usually as they chase her. If you have not put her with them yet it could have happened before, But that looks fresh. You still need to keep her away from others until she heals. If you dont have any meds for chickens use antibotic cream for humans.

I agree, that's a peck wound. Make sure you isolate any new chickens you get...especially a rescue..from your existing flock for the first three weeks, at least. Not doing so can set you up for some serious problems if the newcomer(s) have diseases. Also, a slow introduction is always best...for the new ones and the existing flock. After the quarantine is up we always put our newbies in a pen where they can socialize with the flock but have some protection too. After a week or so more, they can join the flock and there's little problems...we've never had to deal with a peck wound like that.

The bump might be an infection as a result of the wound, or it could be something else. If you can get some Duramycin at the feed store, after you isolate her, mix the antibiotic powder with her water 4 tsp per gallon. Mix fresh solution every day or two. Keep her on that for a week or until the wound heals, then see how the lump is. Could be anything. You can't eat her eggs for three weeks after she has been on the antibiotic. (Duramycin)

Thanks for the input guys. I received 2 birds (this one plus another) from a someone who had a big flock. I isolated the 2 from the rest of my flock. I noticed the bulge yesterday morning and thought she might be egg bound. Roughly 4 hours later after being isolated with her regular companion, I noticed this open sore and immediately isolated her. I'm no expert by any means, but I was thinking she was egg bound and that the other hen started to peck at the bulge. I soaked her in warm water last evening (which relaxed her), dried her off and then I applied blu-kote (pardon my spelling). The mass appears soft and I can see her tensing up like she is trying to move it. Any other suggetions? I've been real careful when handling her, wearing latex gloves, washing , etc. Any more input would be greatly appreciated!!
