Does it seem more like injury from pecking or do you feel that it may be some type of skin irruption?
It's really hard to tell from the photos.
You mention swelling. Is the chick acting normal, eating/drinking, active or is it lethargic?

She isn't lethargic. My husband thinks she is looking better but I'm not sure. I am keeping medicine on her and she has been separated from the others. Really hoping our little Sugar stays strong until the vet gets back in town.

I would get her back with the other chicks, and watch for any pecking. She has been separated for a couple of days, and they do much better with others. Are you using a brooder light. If so what color? Red light tends to decrease pecking. A bad tasting ointment such as pine tar or vicks applied to the wound may discourage pecking.

If it's an abscess, it needs to drain. Kinda seems like it, given the swelling/discoloration you noticed prior to the open wound.

I have no experience of this in chickens, but my cats get these with nearly every wound they get. I'd have to extract whatever gunk I can, rinse with saline, and keep them open with warm compresses. Then I'd treat the cat with antibiotics.

Is the wound still weeping?
