Please help!

Hi all,

I have two 6 month females, an abacot ranger and a crested duck. They are very close and hate being separated. They have plenty of water and food but the abacot will constantly do a few really loud sigle quacks followed by a long and louder 'laughing' quack. She also bows her head to the other female and sort of mumble quacks to her. Does she need a drake? Does anyone understand what this behaviour means? Think my neighbours are losing patience :-(

Hi IzzyFlo, your ducks are super cute! Girls ducks are loud sometimes, especially when they are saying "Hi!" They head bobbing could be part of the mating dance, but they don't really need a drake, unless you want ducklings. Are your neighbors saying they are too loud? Perhaps if you offer to share eggs, they won't mind as much?

That all sounds like normal duck behavior. I'm sorry but females ducks can be quite loud. There really isn't too much you can do about it because that's just what they do. They talk some breeds more than others. I would try sharing eggs and see if your neighbors will accept that as a peace offering. They are your neighbors so you have to decide how to approach this. A drake would not make them quieter and that would be another duck that makes noise albet a quieter duck since they don't actually quack like the females.

Thank you all for your comments I really appreciate it. We have said the neighbours can have some eggs but it doesn't help that neither of the girls are even laying yet! Again, no idea why not :-/ I honestly don't know what to do. The crested female is quiet but the abacot is the smaller but noiser, more demanding duck. But I guess that's just her character bythe sounds of it. Thanks people
