Angel
I awoke to the fierce odor of ash in the air. I gently pulled my head of my wing to get a better view of what was going on. In the distance a ferocious fire was blazing. "Gabbie wake up!" I squawked. The gander didn't budge."Gabbie you have to wake up now!" I yelled louder. The gander remained slumbering. I walked over to my napping mate. I pushed him forcefully with my left wing. The gander stayed unphased by my attempts. I quickly brought my right we behind my back. I threw it forward and smacked Gabbie on his tail feathers.
Whaa whaa whats going on? asked Gabbie.
Theres a fire! I yelled.
Fly higher? he asked.
I sighed No genius a fire!
Fire? he mumbled still dazed from being awoken. Oh my goodness a fire he said now truly conscious. What are we going to do honey? he asked anxiously.
Weve got to make sure everyone is okay I replied
Everyone is so far spread out, there is no way well reach everyone in time said Gabbie. Your right, weve got to think of something fast or everyone will perish We looked up and saw the chickens scurrying toward the goats. Thank goodness for their help. Weve still got to find the scovies.
We quickly ran the perimeter honking savagely. We knew we had had to find everyone as soon as possible. We ran into Pinkie first. Whats going on? she asked Theres a fire near the goats. Weve got to make sure everyone is out of harms way. Oh my goodness thats terrible, Ill round up all of the other scovies. Oh thank you so much Pinky said Gabbie. Its no trouble at all dear she replied. Do you happen to know where Mr. and Mrs. Mallard are? I asked hastily Im sorry but I havent she replied Its okay well continue are search for them I said Please hurry, Id hate for anything to happen to them. We will Gabbie and I said in unison.
Gabbie and I headed towards the northern part of the pen. We returned to our frantic shrieks for the mallard couple. There was no sign of the pair here. When we turned around we were surprised to see Mr. Mallard. Thank goodness we found you said Gabbie. Im glad you here, but where is Mrs. Mallard? I asked She caught up with the Scovies, Pinkie told me you were looking for me so I came to find you too. He replied. A sigh of relief crossed my body. Our mission was complete. Everyone was safe for now.
We walked back to the others. Then we took are places in the huddled flock. We all sat watching the bright flames light up the farm. Within a few minutes a large red truck threw water upon the flames. The fire ceased quickly leaving behind charred black braches. An eerie silence fell upon the farm. We knew we were all lucky that no one was hurt.
I was exhausted from our heroic act. I inched toward Gabbie and rested my head upon his back. I closed my eyes for just a moment. His down was so soft. Maybe I could take a quick nap I told him. He gently touched my neck with his wing. Sweet Dreams my love He said. His words lingered in my head as I drifted off to sleep.
