It matters if you have heavy birds and want to avoid bumblefoot and leg injuries. Banties can have higher perches since they are so lightweight. My Blue Orps' roost is less than two feet off the ground because of their size.

You're right about the heavy breeds, I kept wondering why my BO's were limping on some days, their roost was over 5' high and were hurting them selves when they flew down. This stopped when the roost was lowerd.
