Please post pictures of where a predator went through chicken wire

We have never used chicken wire for the above mentioned reasons. We have heavier-gauge chain link (not the cheapy chain link that some stores carry...some are smart) buried 6 inches with hardware cloth tie-wired to it. We had a canine dig up the chain link fence and BEND it upward at a "convenient" spot where 2 rolls of hardware cloth join at a seam (both sides tie wired together to the fence. The dog ripped through it and killed half of my flock.

We fixed the fence and now have the outside of the fence perimeter lined with cinder block filled with dirt.

Well, I'm not trying to tempt fate or stir the pot or whatever. My coop has been up for over a year and I don't have any plans on changing it until something happens. And believe me you won't get the "OMG I'm devasted" post.

They free range from dawn to dusk so if something wants to get them during the day they have total access. As far as pulling them through the wire, they sleep in their coop so that's not going to happen. The only way would be to have something tear through the wire. I'll deal with that if it happens! For a small run I guess price wise it's feasible, but if you have a large run it would just be outrageously expensive.

But what I don't understand is what's the point of some putting all the welded wire, hardware cloth, chicken wire up all on the sides and turn around and put some cloth netting over the top???

I have welded wire over the top of my pen as well. I KNOW for fact that raccoons have climbed up the walls, so they could have gotten inside had there not been a sufficient top cover. Some parts of my pen have tarp or shadecloth OVER the welded wire.

barred babies i looked in alot alot of threads on this. Nothings 100% but for us I think we are 99.9% ok with the 1inch chicken wire. And talas right about thicker wire but thin wire is sharp and cuts like a knife .Teeth can take alot of pain ,gums, mouthparts, feet not so much.

AS to this, I've seen raccoons tear their paws up trying to dig out of a live trap. I don't think the scraping of broken chicken wire is enough to deter them.

i know Im not changing either but when you look AND read ALL and the pics ALL evidence No coon possum or yote ever broke thru that wire .SO YES IM STAYIN WITH CHICKEN WIRE. (And electric wire too )

I've read enough stories on P&P about predators getting through the chicken wire. I think the consensus would be that it keeps birds in but doesn't keep predators out. True, in 5 min of searching I only found two pics of torn wire. I have seen others before though and I suspect it's not exactly something you feel good about posting after it happens. I'm not even saying don't use it, there very well might be situations where it is fine. If your birds are locked in the coop at night and poultry wire is used only in the run then maybe you only have to worry about daytime predators. If you want to keep hawks from flying into your run then it might be fine. It'll keep many daytime predators out. Why do people use it? I don't know. For some I'm sure it's a matter of cost. Welded wire is expensive. My first tractor has poultry wire. I hadn't yet read P&P when I built it.

you are right Gallo. didnt want to tick nobody off including you. forgive me if i did

I do use it cause its cheap exactly. And like another poster said they can reach in,hence my electric fence(also very cheap)BTW Ialso ran the electric wire on top around the perimeter because i had a coon crawl up the only tree near my pen.set on top of one of my pen post and chew thru my netting and killed some of my birds the next day I put up the wire on top a squirell did the exact same thing and when he hit that wire he did a back flip to the ground.

needless to say no problems for many years. Never too old to learn
