Hello -
Im Rachel and I live in Jefferson, NC. My husband and I have had this NC house for awhile and have lived full time in FL. We decided in FEB. to move here full time and have our FL house as the vaca house :) We have 60 arces and LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!! So enjoying expanding the family:)

My family as listed :) Perfection!!!

1.. Most important..My loving husband and best friend John, he has made all my dreams come true and more :)
2 .. Lex Luthor, my 10 year old Chestnut gelding (he is my profile picture)
3.. Cash, my 2 year old Overo paint stallion
4 .. Max , my 12 year old German Shephard
5.. Milly, my 2 year old Tabby barn cat
6... 6 new CHICKS :)

I found myself in Tractor Supply getting the usual for my boys, feed, shavings, new halters and just spoiling them rotten as always with my family.. While walking around the store I kept hearing this insanely cute peeping... Then as I get closer to one aisle i look down and see the most adorable yellow chicks:) 5 of them just sitting and peeping their hearts out. My jaw dropped, i kept telling my husband when we move up to mountain full time I wanted chickens...I could not control myself, I picked on up and held it and it was so great:) I have been riding horses for over 20 years and love being at the barn with all the animals. I want chickens and goats:) thats all i kept saying. So my tender soft side for anything animal, especially farm animals, I grabbed the last 5 chicks left:) I knew my husband would love them and we had planned to get some!! So went around and got all the supplies for the new babes coming home:) Spoiled them rotten:) they were about 3 weeks old, the last 5 they had left. Skip ahead, they are now just about 5 weeks and doing great!!! The runt in the group is my fav..always runs to me and sits with my as i do my barn chores, so precious... As I had been doing my usual book reading and research, THIS SITE IS AMAZING.. i began to realize WOW there is like a whole CHICKEN world and sooo many breeds.... NO IDEA!! remember I am a horse woman, know everything there is on them...So then I find out what kind of chicks i got...... CORNISH MEAT CHICKENS!!!
OMG!! these are the ones that we eat all the time. My chicken pasta the other nite was made from my kind of chicken... IM CUDDLING with the same breed I ate the other day! WHAT!!!

NEED SOME FEEDBACK GUYS!!! THIS SITE IS SOO GREAT AND LEARNING SO MUCH:)

Did i make a huge mistake getting this breed???

I read they eat so much and can no longer stand up, so i feed them a certain amount each day and they adjust fine to it, is that the right thing to do????

I bonded with one hard!! Is that a mistake cause i been reading horror stories about this breed???

I will not eat any of my animals...I would love eggs but just being around and being pets around barn is fine for me. Is that not wise??

Please any help would be great about this breed. I guess i should have researched this more but i thought a chicken is a chicken. God i really must sound so stupid..I know i hate when people get horses and have NO CLUE what they doing...Ugh Im lame...I will not give up. I have all the time and means to make this work...I love animals.

Well sorry to go on and on , its just i love reading all your posts and info on them. Great stuff!! Looking forward to all your wise advice from experienced owners so that i can get into this fully!!

Nice to meet you all:)

Well I guess you could say that, there was one of these meaty birds that actually survived! It's somewhere on these threads

I guess you could say that, could you post a picture just in case?

In your description they sound active, so maybe they could be just plain Cornish?

I will not eat any of my animals...I would love eggs but just being around and being pets around barn is fine for me. Is that not wise??

That's wise to me!

There are cornish meat birds and cornish regular birds. Meat birds have big, thick legs that are wide set. I'm assuming your yellow chicks are now white which means they should have bright yellow legs. I've never had any of these kind, but if they are cornish meat birds, they will eat to the point of not being able to walk. They aren't genetically designed to live very long at all. Most Cornish meaties are processed at 7 weeks old.

Just in case run out and buy 20 more Chicks ! 4 of five different kinds to distract your self ! Hay you have 60 Acres !! The only possible cure for preparing to lose Chickens you love is to have tons more cuties running around ! I am sorry I do not know much about Cornish Meat Chickens .. Except that they can eat so much their legs can break.. I truly don't believe they are the best choice for pets ... I hope you will go get your self some beauties with great egg production.. In the mean time what little I do know .. Take their food away at night for sure .. ! Good Luck and

Well..I only feed them in the morning and there is still a bit left around the time the horse come in for dinner. And i dont let them eat at nite.
As i looked at the info from the place they came from they just say Cornish. I just assume they are the ones that you eat only. Like its said all over the net.
I will take pics of them tomorrow. They have white feathers on wings and stil the baby yellow around head and other lil places.
Their legs seem porprotional to their size. The runts legs look normal..the bigger ones have bigger feet.

I feel so stupid. That i got chicks that will kick the can soon.

There are Just so many great breeds to choose from ! Every one has their personal favorites .. for Fun I enjoy bantoms ( small and cute) For Great egg production I like several breeds from Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorps .. White Leg horns for white Eggs. I enjoy some Easter Eggers for Green eggs. I have chosen some just because I think they are Beautiful..
