Please read last post, need help with newly hatched chick.

You need to give it at least 24 hours out of the egg before you worry. Those types of things usually correct themselves, and I am betting this one will too because it is small.

Okay thanks Debi!

I know when we first got our puppy from the pound she had this same thing, well you know, except without the egg. haha When we took her to the vet, she told use it was a umbilical hernia, and that we just needed to gently push it back in. Ive never had this happen with chicks so I didnt know if it was the same thing.

It is actually quite common to have the small ones like you do. It's when they are bigger that it is time to intervene. If it is not shrinking by this time tomorrow, come back and we can holler for experts!

Okay thanks. That makes me feel a better. What about the shivering though? Is that normal? Right now its still on its back, but does roll around and move some when I start talking to her. Its not walking around like the others are. I just really hate to see her shiver.

It the head jerking around?

No not really. I mean when he does walk he sorta shakes. But nothing more than any of the other chicks.

I would just make sure it wouldn't be on it's back too much if there are other chicks that are getting around better. I think it will be gone in a few hours but I have seen other chicks peck at it so as long as no one bothers it then I think you can relax. I think the shaking could just be poor coordination? I would go to bed and check in the morning

How long are you planning on waiting to open your incubator? I also had many hatch out a day early but i still have some pips/slow zipping and today is my day 22 as well...

How is your little guy doing today havi? I had one in my last hatch with the very same little `blob`and still had a little yolk attached. He is a little rowdy now...the most active of that hatch...but was very weak and shaky for the first couple days. It is so hard to watch that. Hope yours picks up too.

Doing better. She's not walking around too much, but better than last night. Last night she was just sitting there laying on her back. Now she sorta wobbles around. The gunk has now dried on her and the little bump is still there. Its seemed to have dried some or maybe getting smaller? So far she is my only lavender araucana egg to hatch. So I really hope she gets better!
