If you want a bantam breed that frequently goes broody but not ALL the time you should look into d'uccles. Everyone I've let hatch eggs is a good momma, some more protective than others. I keep my broodies separate though, so I don't know how good at protecting the chicks from other hens goes. They are good foragers even with their feathered feet, and don't have crests, so they can see predators from above. They are also a really sweet breed, and most of mine enjoy being petted.
