My husband and I were talking about unique things that we could use for nesting boxes to save money. I have heard some really unique and creative ideas in the past, so I thought I would ask you guys to share your ideas with us.

I simply use empty plastic 5 gallon buckets. You can get them on any building site from the sheetrocking crew, or you can buy them at the local hardware store. If you get them from a job site, just clean them out and let them dry. I attached two of them (on their side) to a short 2" x 4" board that I screwed in the corner of the coop. Take a hand saw and cut one of the lids in half. Then take your saw and cut a notch in each half of the lid so that when it is put into place on the bucket, the hen has enough room to get into the bucket. Put a little hay or straw in the bottom for them to nest in. If it gets dirty and needs cleaned out, simply take off the half lid and scoop out the mess, replace lid and hay and you are all done with cleanup.

I use the covered type cat litter pans. Make sure you drill a few holes in the bottom, just incase water ever gets in.

I also use plastic milk crates with a portion of the front cut away.

Whatever I have laying around. A cardboard box, milk crate, old wooden box, wood scraps, 5 gal buckets, whatever.

Plastic storage bins, we just cut a square out of the front. They can be moved easily (great for broody hens!) and cleaned out easy.

I also have some plastic baskets I got on clearance.
