So I purposely bought 3 Buff Orpington pullets from TSC a couple of months ago, because I wanted some brown eggs and one of my students at school has BOs and said they are sweet birds. They are about 10 weeks now. Out of those 3, I have one white EE cockerel ( he's now crowing, so no question there) and two pretty orange birds that both look pretty much like this. This one is the bigger of the two, but they are almost identical otherwise. Any hope I will be getting my brown eggs??? I'm having my doubts. :(

They actually look like pullets :) They have pullet bums and don't look like they have any cockerel marking in the saddle area.... The combs and waddles on some breeds can mislead; Orps have big combs and waddles for hend..... Judging by how red the combs are, they should be squatting/ nearing POL. :)

Oops sorry, you said 10 weeks....they have a bit before laying. ;)

No, I'm sorry but TSC was wrong. Shortgrass he does have sickle feathers (you can see them in the 2nd picture) and that comb is way to big for 10 weeks, sorry.

LL

10 week old pullet.

They're only 10 weeks old. That's too young to reliably have saddle feathers or cockerel coloring. It is also way too young for a pullet to have that large and red a comb. Definite cockerels, sorry.

I was also looking for some hens to lay brown eggs. We went to TSC and the sign said red sexlink pullets.
I was angry when we learned they are white leghorns, but over time I've learned to love them. Soon we should have eggs, just not brown ones.

I like the sound of that deal better then the one with roosters instead of hens!

Hmmm... 3 boys out of 9 who were all supposed to
be girls... Guess that will teach me to but chicks
from TSC.

Maybe these two are just early bloomers and there's still
hope for them laying eggs... I hate to have to get rid of
someone at this point, these are our first chickens and my kids
adore them, but I have no need for 3 roos with only 9 birds total.

As I said, the other cockerel is a big white EE... Talk about a surprise when
his feathers started coming in. He acts totally different from the rest and while
I held out hope he was a "she" even with my nonexistent
chicken experience, I always had a feeling that she was in fact a he. He is now crowing his head off, chasing the others all around, and he always seems to be on the edge of the flock watching what goes on but if he takes the lead and heads off somewhere, the others all follow. He doesn't like to be picked up, doesn't want treats from
your hand, etc.
These two BO's, on the other hand still fall right in with the other girls ( 3 EEs, 3 Andalusians- all 10 weeks and I'm pretty confident females). They seem a little smarter than some of the others in some respects ( they'll jump for hand feed treats and they figured out the chicken door on the coop 1st) but in other respects they aren't as bold as the other girls ( won't sit on your arm/hand or fly up to perch like the EE's/Andalusian). I don't know how much of that is breed related/gender related or just personality of individual chickens.

Guess I'll be listening to a trio in the mornings before too long. :(
Thanks for the opinions!! :).
