I got this Barred Rock and "she" is such a good chicken! The best one out of 3 I think and I am hopping for a hen. We cannot have Roo's in Huntington Beach, Ca 92646 so I will be trading or giving her away to a new home if "she" is a Roo.

Here is some photo's and a video so you guys can see here/him! I hope this helps:)

I am not an expert, but barring seems dark enough to declare her a pullet. What was it about her that was causing you to worry? I know that I was concerned for a while about my BR when she was young because she seemed to develop her comb so early.

It was the comb and she had a white dot on her head up an tell a week ago.

She looks like a pullet to me based on amount of black in her feathers and the black on her legs. The comb is bigger and redder than I've seen on mine but the rest is very pullet-like.

It could be a BR mix. My BR mix I hatched was very dark too. I rehomed him with another. I kept only one.

Here's my BR mix. The other two chicks were just as dark, but the combs well advanced at 2 weeks old.

I'm very sorry, but that's a boy.:(

So, how old is she? And, would you say that the 3rd and 4th pictures show the feather colors truer, or would you say that the last picture is more true?
If the last picture is more true, I am still leaning toward pullet even though the comb appears more red than one might expect.

The hatchery/backyard breeder quality BR, in many cases, is a bit muddier in coloration and lacking distinctive, clean barring. They are almost cuckoo, rather than barred. This "messes up" the predictability of sexing sometimes. Leg wash too is not a 100% indicator either.

What cannot be messed with is the early red combs and red wattles on the cockerels and the yellow combs and no wattles on the pullets. Those are sex characteristics that are more reliable. If within another two weeks, your bird has a bright red comb and small red wattles, clearly formed, then you'll be well advised on it being a cockerel.
