Plymouth Rock thread!

Thank you, Yes I got 8 SPPR chicks last week. I guess I am addicted as I have more eggs that should be hatching out in 2 weeks. I am only getting a few eggs a week from only two pullets. I had four pullets but a few week ago I choose to cull two of them as their cushion problem was to much.

The SPPR are pretty, I dont have any. I am having withdrawls from hatching. I normal hatch a lot in fall, but I commited to shutting the incubator off for a few months, man i wish I wouldnt of done that lol. Hopefully you get a couple of good breeding canidates.

You and I will stick together. I've been clean since July ;)

I hatched year round last year... I swore I wouldn't do it again. Too much chaos.

I found a surprise chick under a silkie today.. didn't even know she was setting that long. LOL

I hope I can last until spring. My last hatch was in September. I like to hatch in fall so that the chicks are grown around summer time. Of course I still hatch in the summer. I am getting another incubator soon hehe. What a pleasant surprise! How many did she hatch?

Just one. There are six or more eggs left. I have no idea when she started setting. I've been so busy.

Just goes to show you really don't need to mess with a broody or her eggs. They know what they are doing!

If I didn't have broodies hatching so frequently, I'm sure I'd want to hatch manually by now. I had a broody hatch last month too, and two the month before.

Man your hens are getting down to business. I haven't had a broody hen forever.

Two of my four adult Rocks went broody in September :) The rest were all Silkies or Silkie crosses.
One was a Silkie cross Barred Rock, and she was/is my very best mother. Raised 12 chicks and took on a cooper hawk and won!

I confined one Rock as she was being picked on and when she was being bullied, she'd take off and leave her chicks defenceless... The other one was good, but lost 6/9 of her chicks to the hawk. They aren't bad mothers, just not protective enough I guess.

wow she fought iff a hawk! What a giod little mom. Some just have the natural mothering instincts sime never quite pick it up.

I currently have one of my two barred rocks living in my house. Poor girl developed a vent prolapse and she's only 10 months :( She's on the road to recovery after being stitched up by the vet. She did enjoy the twice daily spa visits to the kitchen sink. Much more than I enjoyed scrubbing it with javex afterwards!

Here are some of the Barred from Saturday. Some are younger than others, so I am not going to try to guess the age. I do know the ones in the tree are 13 weeks for sure, as they were broody hatched.. but the other vary in age from 14 - 18 weeks

This one is 13 weeks (broody raised)

13 week old male.

Just to show leg spacing

One of the 3 tagged boys. This is the youngest one. 14 weeks.
