Plymouth Rock thread!

Thank you, I did think the dark was a pullet (I have to hold them to look at their feathers), we have 2 darks and they just look different to the lights. Strange that they have hatched with what seems to be the light barred being cockerels and the dark pullets.

Not strange at all. Barred Rock males have two barring genes, making their white appear brighter, while females only inherit one barring gene making their black more predominant.
 
Cool, so then, does that mean we won't get light females or dark males? Or if we keep a light male and dark hens what are we likely to get?
I did sit and stare at them for a long time comparing the barring and worked out that the lights had wider white stripes on their feathers.
Thanks so much for your info, there is so much to learn. We have only ever kept laying hens so we are very new to the rooster business.
