Plymouth Rock thread!

There are just to many threads to follow, but I'm dropping in to find out where I can order BR eggs that I can put in with my line I got from Kathyinmo.

I've recently expressed concern that the older breeds are losing out to the newer lavender, blue, yadda yadda breeds, if you know what I mean. Seems to me that we'll be hard pressed to find chickens to give us more than eggs, but I'm just thinking out loud.

Anyhow if anyone has a line of BR's and can supply me with eggs to hatch I'd appreciate it. I can wait til late winter if need be, but want to get things in line now.

Thanks,

rancher

Well, my elderly Barred Rock hens are making monkeys out of the younger main flock. At first, I thought they weren't laying. At their ages (going on 7 years old now), they lay in spurts, then take a couple months off. Well, I found their stash for this week-2 Becca, 2 Amanda and 2 Fern, all under the roost shelf, hidden in the shadows. BAD girls for dissing the nestboxes (though I get it with poor Amanda), but good girls for still being able to crank them out, especially Amanda, who can barely walk from her arthritis. One of Amanda's was under the step roost and the rest were under the roost shelf. I look in the back corner every day, but I missed the front left corner, I guess. Becca and Amanda will be 7 in March and Fern is just over 4 years old. They've all had at least two molts this year, like so many of the others, poor things.

I have been collecting eggs off my Dick Horstman - Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock pullets for about a week and in three days I should have close to 20 eggs to put in the incubator. I don't like hatching pullet eggs and I also don't like hatching eggs at this time of year. But I do also think it would be wise to have backup just in case. So in three weeks if I am lucky I will be posting pictures of my next batch of Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock chicks. :)

Good morning all......finally separated all my breeders from my "to sell" birds over the weekend and introduced the keeper cockerels to the ladies. What a funny experience that was...awkward teenagers trying to show off for the girls, too funny. One of them was actually a bit afraid of the girls (smart guy, LOL)

Wyn - didn't you to to a show up your way? Did you show any or just attend? Any pictures? Results?

Happy Monday all....

Yah, we see who wears the.....fluff.....in that flock, eh? HA! A good feeling to get all separated and just make that final decision without looking back, eh?

Yep, it was a good show. I didn't show any Rocks, but a woman who bought hatching eggs from me a couple years ago showed a 2-year old cock bird from my line and won BB (I've asked her to send me a pic - hopefully, she took one of him at the show. I'm kicking myself that I didn't)! There were some lovely Barreds and Whites there, so I was overjoyed to see an SPR take BB.

(on a side note: I also took BB and RB with a Black Giant pullet and cockerel, and RV with a Black Copper Marans cockerel, in addition to an overall 3rd place win in the Marans egg show, as well as a people's choice win. Also, the young man that took RESERVE CONTINENTAL with a Black Copper Marans K - was bred out of parent stock from me; so, it was really a great show overall!)

It was a really good show, lots of fun

WOW.....an SPR took best of breed??!! That's great....I know how the barreds and the whites are so that is QUITE an accomplishment!! Would love to see pix if that lady sends them to you. You should be quite proud that these came from your line of birds

Thanks, Scott! There were only a couple Whites there this year; I suspect whoever it is who usually shows a ton of them at this show went to the other show down in Ohio rather than this one; honestly, if that person had shown his ginormous whites here, I don't think this SPR cock would have placed. Then again, one never knows! It made me feel good to see "my" bird there, though!

A few pictures of my Danny Padgett - Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock chicks at 3 1/2 weeks old. It looks like I have 6 female chicks & 5 male chicks. :)
