I got my hatchery BR from Meyer. I was pleased with their service. She's sweet and started laying at 24 weeks even in the bitter cold. Others can comment on whether she's a decent looking bird or not. I know her comb is a little crooked.

She's a lovely hatchery hen. They are what started my love of the Barred Rocks. I have some daughters of my Ideal hatchery hens as well as daughters out of a friend's McMurray BR flock. Two are 7 years old and still laying. Great gals.

For sources of the Marvine Stukel line of Barred Rocks that I have, you could try to contact Pine Grove in GA or Barred Rocker in VA. Not sure who else has them right now. They are huge hens with stupendous barring like Ida here:

Your in California, don't know any sources there but to get a source that is closer to you and an inexpensive supplier: Good Shepherd Ranch Poultry.

They usually sell eggs at 20 dollars per dozen plus shipping. I've heard the packaging is not the best. But for the price these are old Ringlet Barred Rocks. There are better breeders who've taken this line and made it better and also charge for that too. So shop around and take into account all the things that matter. Good packaging, Line of bird, how shipping distance may effect the hatchability of eggs/ if at all. Large hub to large hub would be negligible for overall distance traveled.

Personally I've had terrible hatching experience with shipped eggs. It very well could be due to my local area and handling. But don't expect if you shell out big cash and it's packaged well for you to get a good hatch. This is why I tell you about GSPR's Barred Rocks. For the price they are worth a good look at.

Anna6, as I messaged you, you're likely better off getting eggs from DesertMarcy or someone as close to you as possible. Shipping is brutal on eggs. We've never had an egg break due to our packing, to my knowledge, but, the rough handling and atmospheric pressure changes are tough on the air sac.

Love to help you out. Hope things work out for you as we're really proud of our Bared Rocks, but a good source is going to be someone a bit closer, I'm afraid.

I strongly recommend if a person wants a breed to breed and maintain for there pleasure and admiration of that breed/ variety pay the price and have them shipped by recognized breeders who will do this. Dick Hortsman is a person easily googled and here on BYC. He's got some great birds but regret not a Barred Plymouth. Oh well, there are sources that will ship live birds. No real question of what your getting excepting if you can show it this next fall.

For me I've done the shipped. Not ended well. All calamities happened to those birds directly. Yes few birds due to shipping hacthes but still? Of all the birds a skunk or what not takes my prize pullet? Ugh. Several times over years???

Murphy had nothing on me but still, If you want a breed to breed then go live bird and incubate to make huge selection for culling to good birds.

Anybody going to the gateway poultry show in Bloomingtion, Indiana?(is it sad that I live in Indiana and not even sure if I spelled Bloomingtion right?) It is one April 13th. On the website flyer it says that the Plymouth Rock Club is having a meet. I sent in a check to become part of the club. I am going to try and attend the show and of course the meeting if I go. My birthday is at the end of April so all the more reason to go!

GSPR will not ship live chicks.... unless you can arrange for a plane to be landing you meet them at the air port. He will not ship through the post office.

I got 4 doz eggs from him. Had 7-8 hatch and 2 have lived to laying age. 2 very expensive pullets too.

 

[Silver Rock]

Below is a picture I took today of my Padgett line cockerel at 4 1/2 months old. He is in the middle of a molt so he is looking a little rough. I am very much looking forward to seeing him fill out over the next couple months as I do like the looks of his frame.

Below is a picture of my Horstman line cockerel that I took on August 27 of last year when he was at 4 1/2 months of age. You can compare him at 4 1/2 months old to the 4 1/2 month old Padgett line cockerel above.

And here is a picture of the Horstman line cockerel I took today now at 9 1/2 months of age.
