My one and only BLRW hen has somehow gotten Pnemonia, looks healthy otherwise, eats and drinks fine and seems to be a decend weight just is having a really though time breathing.
What meds are out there that would be good to use? The powdered stuff for in the water our feed store offers doesn't help one bit.....

Tylan 50 is helpful in respiratory ailments. I can't tell you any more than that, though. I have a zero tolerance policy for respiratory illnesses, so I don't treat them. A search through the archives should give the correct dosage.

Good luck.

I ususally don't treat them either, but this is my only hen of the breed and and I just found myself a decend rooster to go with her..... at this time I cannot locate any breeders with any hens for sale. So gotta try and save the one I got.

I hope our Vet here can get me Tylan 50.
Thank you.

Hello,
First, sorry you are going through this. It is really tough!

You can get Tylan 50 at the feed store, no need to go to the vet. Be sure to ask at the feed store for needles and syringes. Ask for small ones and tiny needle. Some people give this medication orally, but it's really meant to be given as a shot into the muscle. This medication is not necessarily meant for poultry but it does work. The dose I have seen many times on here is 0.5 cc (or ml is the same thing) for large fowl, and 0.25 cc for bantam Find the meatiest part on the chicken breast and inject there after pulling back on plunger to make sure there is no blood) It can save your bird, but it may become a carrier of this respirtory illness. It's a difficult situation honestly, and there is much controversy regarding it. You can go ahead and treat her while you consider all the implications. Good luck!

Oopr, realized you are in Canada and not sure if your feed store will have it or not. Sorry!

Our feed store doesn't carry any medical supplies for anything, only vitamin powder for the water. They are not allowed to sell any medications in farm/feed stores(people doing off label things etc got that shut down).

Called our vet and they don't have it either. They can order the soluable tylan 50 up from across the line but it comes in a big container that over $50 and meant for over 100 gallons of water..... also that will take several weeks....
They don't deal with poultry/birds either and cannot give me anything else(they are so glad that I usually know what I need and don't pester them any further).

ugh!!!!!!!!!

Hey, I am so sorry about your hen. I was a practicing veterinary tech. up until about a year ago. Everyone is right about the tylan 50. When you buy it it will probably be listed for use in swine or cattle. I give 1cc in the meatiest part of the breast being careful not to puncture the crop or a vein. This will make her a little drowsy for a few hours but it should clear up. I would go ahead and treat all other chickens n clse proximity to her just to be on the safe side. If your hen shows signs of improvement in about 2 weeks but not quite well follow up with 0.5 cc's of tylan. Be careful and God bless.

Last year when I tried to get Vet supplies from the US they never arrived...... i guess they did not make it past the border. Gonna go bug my vet today and see if she can get the injectable in somehow.....
