My 10 week old pullet just ate a small brown mushroom from our backyard. I just noticed them as soon as she had a bite of the top. She didn't eat te whole thing, just a bit of the top. This happened an hour and a half ago. Last time I checked she was fine, but she is outside in the coop. What should I look for? What can I do for her? Will it even harm her? I read somewhere that chickens stay away from poisonous things because they are bad tasting. She was pretty enthusiastic about eating it until I pulled her away. Please help, I'm really concerned! I live in Massachusetts.

Well... in the pacific NW those are pretty harmless lawn mushrooms. My Pugs gobble those up with no problem... tho I still pick them out and toss em. Last summer I went to pull out the ONE different looking shroom... but my littlest pug snatched it away and ate it... then vomited most of it up. Two hours later we were in the ER treating her, and two days later and $1,600 dollars later she came home just fine. Whew! You just can't tell, but I'm pretty sure my hens have bitten into one of those with no problem ( the little tan lawn mushrooms). I would just observe anything different going on with her.

I've never had a chicken die from a mushroom or any other plant. I suspect she will be just fine. If by any chance she isn't, there isn't much you could have done about it.

@chickielips I'm glad that they look like the harmless kind. I'm really not familiar with poisonous vs edible mushrooms! On a side note, you have pugs?! Me too! Sorry I just get really excited when I find other pug owners:) I'm glad your pug is alright!!! That sounds really scary!

@keesmomThats probably the scariest part, that nothing can help, even if she does get sick. I'm really hoping she isn't sick.
