Polish attacked by dog

Hello, my polish was attacked by the neighbors dog last night. It doesn’t seem too bad, she just seemed more scared than anything. She does have a minor puncture wound under one of her wings and missing lots of feathers and skin irritation in that area. Any recommendations on treating her? We separated her last night cleaned the area with peroxide and put non medicated A&D on it. Thank you.

If you need to clean it again, don't repeat the peroxide, repeated use can inhibit healing. Instead use some chlorhexidine. Veterycin is also good. I would apply some plain triple antibiotic ointment to the wound, and just keep an eye on it, make sure it heals and there are no signs of infection that show up. They usually heal up well from minor injuries. Since it's a puncture and an animal bite, it bears watching to make sure. The feathers may grow back sooner if the shaft is completely gone, if they are just broken off then they probably won't grow back until the bird molts.

I didn’t get a picture of it last night, but this is today after I cleaned it.

Looks pretty good at this point. Punctures can be more apt to get infected as they tend to close up and oxygen can't get in there, thus letting bacteria thrive. So it's important to flush those out well. I don't see any reason that this won't heal up. She may be sore for a while. Bruising may show up and will probably look greenish.

Thank you. You don’t think it looks infected already? I think it looks more yellow than it did yesterday. I did spray blu-kote on the whole area after I took the picture.

I don't see anything that looks like infection in the picture, but often pictures are not as good as being there. Some of that traumatized tissue is going to scab or dry up, new healthy tissue will be exposed when the scabs come off. I would use an ointment that stays moist, like a triple antibiotic ointment, (even vaseline can be used)rather than blu-kote. Blu-kote is better for very superficial injuries and it disguises what the tissue really looks like, so that can be problematic. Keeping the area moist rather than letting it dry out will help with healing. I would not bandage it. If you see any discharge, pus build up (pus will be firm rather than liquid and will be creamy in color) or have any bad odor, any redness beyond what you might expect from the trauma, that could indicate infection. Also I'd keep an eye on droppings, those can sometimes be an indicator. Using a chlorhexidine solution or some veterycin you can flush the area daily as needed. I would keep her on puppy pads or clean towels, to help keep it clean, rather than any loose bedding material.
There are some pictures here of some wounds healing, may help to know kind of what to expect, the last one pictured is the closest to what you have.

If you are worried about infection then I would oder some amoxicillin to have on hand, you can get it as a fish antibiotic online as fish mox or aqua mox without a prescription. It has a long shelf life and can be good to have on hand in case needed.
