I was browsing though the forum and saw a post about polish chicks being sexed by the shape of their puff crest on the top of their head. Is there any truth to this? I only saw one person make the comment but they stated it worked for them. If so are they any readers familiar with Polish that can help me sex my 4 week old chick early? TIA photos are of my Buff Laced from week one to week four.

Looks like a cockerel to me.

Stance, big comb and reddish color in the last pic.

Not sure on small chicks, but on older ones yes the crest is distinctly different. The females keep a short bob while the males look more like rock stars or shoulder length.. more long and flowing.

Cute baby! :love

Note: you can't sex polish, or anything else by crests.
What people do, is they see something, sex them that way once, by chance, the genders happen to be correct. So then they think that it's a reliable way to sex chicks. It isn't. Only reliable way, is by comb, male feathering, (12 weeks), and sometimes crest.

I agree that chicks can't be sexed by their crest but they are distinctly different once they reach a certain point.

I'd be surprised if you can't tell by comb and waddles at 8 weeks... I don't have to wait until 12 weeks even on my Silkies... to identify boys. Girls can sometimes take a bit longer to verify they aren't just late blooming boys. And some lines will be harder to tell than others.

BUT... Polish chicks don't have beards... do they?!

After looking... I guess SOME do. Cute birds. :pop
