Hi there
Of my small army of almost six week old chicks, four of them are Polish chicks, and I wasn't able to sex them when they were younger (everyone else in the squad is female). Unfortunately I am not allowed to keep roosters in my city but fortunately the farm that I picked up the fertile eggs from is happy to take back in any boys.
Well, one of the Polish chickens, Dora, was eager to introduce himself and started crowing around 4 weeks old. I am getting ready to move the little baby cakes from their brooder to their official chicken palace in my backyard, and I am concerned that Dora's lovely vocals will disturb my neighbors before I am able to determine the sex of the other three Polish chickens with my amateur eyes.
I would prefer to rehome him and any other brothers he may have at the same time to minimize the stress of the transition on him/them, and was hoping I could get some feedback from more knowledgeable polish chicken enthusiasts about their sexes. Especially because I know this is pretty early in the game to assess sex for Polish chickens. I'm a little suspicious that I've got four roosters based on my eyes, but I would be interested to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for your insight in advance
Dora - lead vocalist energy, classic male spiky crest shape, visible waddles, bur bump on legs, large
Dr. Clucktens ("Doc") - visible waddles and rocking an unexpected fauxhawk. I'm under the impression that they are a Polish based on what I was told when I bought the eggs, but the crest is reading more punk rock than I expected (they're all the same age). Perhaps they are an unexpected cross or other breed? Medium sized.
Muffin Top - no visible waddles and while their crest is softer than Dora's, I can't decide on whether or not it is still spiky/v-shaped. On the smaller side of medium but definitely not a bantam.
Stormy - baby doll is l.a.r.g.e. and has pretty robust waddles. Their crest seems the roundest of the four to me even though it's still a little v-shaped. They have five toes and no burs on their legs, but very spiky head...burs? I'm pretty sure that's the wrong term, sorry about that
