We just noticed one of our buff polish hens have a black spot on the bottom part of her beak and some inflammation at the corner of it. Any idea what this is? She’s eating and acting herself. It does seem to bother her to open up her mouth but inside looks healthy.

Yellow spots could be wet fowl pox. Have you had any mosquito problems? Normally canker presents necrotic lesions with a very bad odor. However in this instance I see a hole in her lower beak which could possibly be canker, or maybe cancer but I'm not sure about the latter.

In any case, you can treat for for canker if you wish. I recommend Ronidazole. Here's where you can purchase it and follow the directions for a large bird. Once the treatment is completed, you'll want to do preventative dosing for the life of your hen because canker causes birds to be carriers for life and is spread to others via waterers. Keep an eye on your other birds and consider inspecting inside their mouth's as well.

After a week of treatment and if there isnt improvement and the lesions havnt cleared up, it might be cancer.
Here's where you can buy the Ronidazole:
