Yesterday afternoon I found my smaller polish hen laying in the coop house, on the floor. This one is usually the most active, vocal and happy. Very unusual for her to even get IN the house.
I noticed a few neck feathers poking out to the side, I didnt have my phone because I was doing regular afternoon stuff....
She let me pick her up with no squabble, again very unusual for this gal.
I looked closer and there was a chunk of skin rolled up with muscle exposed. Thats why the feathers were poking out.
The wound area was dried and had some feathers stuck to it.
Took her inside and got gloved up, started very gently cleaning around that wound.
The big roll of skin was still nice and pink, telling me its still viable. I dont know if I did correctly or not but, I got my non pain relief neosporin and many qtips..
I gently cleaned the wound, with her wrapped in a soft towel. She only closed her eyes and laid still for me while I took my time and cleaned it up pretty good.
I didnt take any photos last night and I wish I had. I was more worried about helping her and didnt even think about it.
So this morning, I got her in the bathroom and checked it out again... Looks better this morning than when I found her yesterday afternoon.

Okay, so my husband seems to believe her roo did this to her....
She isnt bullied by any other hens, she isnt a bully either. Its pretty much harmonious in their coop.
Its not wrapped up at this moment and the roll of skin is dangling. It still looks good, soft and pink.
Now, if her roo did this, I wont tolerate it.
I hate to think he did it to her.
Any thoughts?
Advice?
Comments?
What to do about that roll of skin?
I would LOVE for it to heal back, I dont know If it will...
Yall help me out here...
Please

I know those arent the best photos. I took advantage of her laying still.
She is up , standing on the small counter now.
Should I wrap the wound back up?
I dont know what to do with that flap of alive skin.

Most important thing is to not wrap it. Needs to air heal.

I've personally never seen an injury like this, being produced by a rooster/cockerel. Thinking maybe a fight broke out, or a predator got in somehow.

Flesh wound care I reccomend:

Keep cleaned, & moisten with Triple Antibiotic ointment(none pain Relieving), make sure it has enough dry time in between. Can be anywhere between a couple hours to a day. It encourages granulation for proper healing.

My thoughts are something tried to grab her through their fence/top... the night before.
She sleeps high on top of a "tee-pee" of large sticks. Very close to the cover over their outdoor area. They all sleep on it. She just sleeps up higher than the rest of them.
We are so fortunate, if this is a predator, its the first one in 6 years. Last one, a huge stray cat grabbed a one of my show silkie hens, right in front of me and was GONE before I could even process what happened...

What is going to happen with the flap of skin?
Should I take her to our veterinarian and have it removed?

It more likely was a predator of some sort.

The flap is fine left, & even if you think it needs to be removed, it's a simple procedure that can be done at home.

If left, the flap will shrivel up, & fall off during the healing process.
