I am currently in lockdown of a very unsuccessful incubation process. I started with 7 eggs, but after incubator issues early on went into lockdown yesterday with only 2 hatchable. One is my polish egg that does not appear to be a banty, although her eggs are small. It should be a polish/silkie cross that is hatched. She pipped about an hour after going into lockdown. The air cell(I checked before going into lockdown) is very large so I was already concerned. ALSO, this one had a small indention crack at the air cell end going into incubation that I missed. She laid it within moments of starting incubation. I was so excited that I guess I didn't check it well. Could this one be further along because it's a small egg. It's been about 12 hours since pip. I know that's not usually cause for concern, but I nervous. I would really like them both to hatch being there are only 2.

According to the developmental professor I had in college, chicken eggs have to be warm for nine hours before they actually begin developing. Since yours was laid and then incubated immediately, you skipped about nine hours worth of wait-time, which may account for some of this.

A crack makes for more air exchange and more water loss, which would explain the large air cell.

Slightly less than ideal circumstances (with the crack), but pipping means there's a pretty good chance of hatching. Nothing, of course, is ever guaranteed.

Good luck.

Thank you! While I was gone the other egg pipped and fully hatched and still no progress from my polish. I went ahead and opened the whole a little. She is chirping but not hatching. It has been 24 hours now. Should I assist completely or wait?
