I am not up on this blue, black, splash thing and what would give you what, yet.
So I have a pair of splash Polish that I have been collecting eggs from and one just hatched. It looks blue, is that right? For some reason, I thought I read that splash x splash = splash?

Yup, Splash X Splash makes 100% splash. Your chick will probably turn into a very dark splash, they can come in a variety of shades, some can look almost white except for 2-3 dark feathers and some will look almost blue.

Ok thanks, I thought that was what I had read. Now that he is drying, I do see more white on his wings. It was just weird to see him come out all blue like that, lol.

After a few generations of splash x splash breedings, you'll begin to notice a decrease in the quality of the splash coloration in the offspring so at some point you should bring in wc blue or black birds.

Yes, splash x splash results in 100% splash. But, I agree with LilPeeps. You need to bring in blue or black birds to keep the splash color at its best. For showing, a splash x splash bird usually has the best coloring, but if you continued this bird in pens with only splash, the color would lose its vibrancy in subsequent generations. So, don't forget to bring the colors back in!

I've found that blue x blue matings produce the best colored splash birds, as opposed to splash x splash.

I have had silkie chicks that ended up being splash - look blue when they hatched. It was a very pale blue color. And then as the chick got its feathers in it started showing splotches. So dont worry its likely to be a splash even though it looks blue right now. You should show us photos! I love photos!

Ok, the problem is that there are a couple other roosters in the pen, but they matured later than the splash and there are several splash roosters in the pen so I thought that there was a good chance of getting some pure splash. Now that being said, the other roosters are all red, different breeds but red, so I don't think I could get a blue chick from any of those matings. Oh wait, there is one white roo in there as well, (yes, I know I really need to get them separated but it won't stop raining here). Anyway, I take it the first blue chick is crossed somehow because it doesn't look real crested. Now, today I just hatched a second one...also blue but the third one that hatched with it is definitely splash. I will wait for them to dry off and then get a picture. They are very pretty.

On a side note, also to hatch with them is the first of my Jap/Mille crosses. Hoping to work on a mille fleur Japanese. This first one is yellow with black tips and feathered legs, so far, lol.

Oh also wanted to mention that I do have a blue Polish coming. It has a bit of growing to do but she then will go in the pen with the Splash.
