I have 4 red sex link hens. We're wanting to add to our little flock. I just fell in love with these polish chickens. Just gotta have one. Went to order some, but they don't sex them. Have had REALLY bad experiences with roos. Was attacked several times as a child by this monster roo of my father's who just owned the back yard. He hated everyone buy my father. We bought 8 "pullets" 2 yrs ago turned out 4 were roos. We were going to keep them anyway cause we loved them. One flogged me and I took them back to the fella. Wasn't even gonna go there again. My neighbor had a silkie roo and he was the sweetest thing on earth. Any chance that the polish roos are sweet as well, and will they get along with my sex links. We were goin to get a couple more sex links and buff orp. as well. All thoughts are appreciated.

can you post some pictures im going to incubate some eggs, and i have never saw any of the chicks

Did you get Tolbunt eggs somewhere? If so, do you mind if I ask where, as we need more bloodlines.

As for pics, once we get some watermarked, I will post some here. Until then you can see pics on our Facebook page. Look for Creekside Acres.

I can sex my Polish with >90% accuracy by crest shape at hatching. I do pretty well with silkies too- but lose accuracy once they're over a few days old. Rob and I are working on statistics for a science fair project on sexing chicks.

I would and i'm sure there are others on this thread, that would love to hear and SEE your findings on this. Can you explain it a little...maybe with a pic or two...
I'd love to try to sex mine.... they're supposed to hatch around the 11th of March.... 5-6 WCB...

Not me - wish I was... Unless the parents were a cuckoo hen and a non-cuckoo rooster, I can't tell the difference til the males start getting their shiny hackles and rock star hair do...

OK. I wasted 2 hours trying to upload pictures last night and kept getting "You cannot replace an existing file" messages. Now my desktop looks like a teenager with chick acne. My husband is just finishing up a website for me, so I will have him put them there. One really cannot explain adequately without pictures. The females' crests are rounder, the males' crests are slightly flattened in front and oblong. I am never wrong on a male but can be fooled by a female who turns out to be an exceptionally pretty male. Frizzles can mess me up and I am wrong on them most frequently, but I would say a 90% success rate beats 50% hands down. I have tried this on a few silkies with good success. Again, you cannot do this well once the chick fuzz is gone and the feathers start to come in.

Thanks cmsdvm!!! I know exactly what you're talking about, however, I didn't realize it could be an indicator of sex! When my next batch of Polish chicks hatches, I will separate them into two groups by crest shape and test your theory!!! Will let you know how it works!
