What you get is a bird that looks very much like a gold laced. There is very little white at all to them. They also have more of the american style "orange" looking color than the good mahogany that the tolbunts should have. We had a conversation about this with someone about a week or so ago and they said that this will return to the mahogany color we want after taking them back to the tolbunts for a few generations. To get tolbunts from these you take the best girls and put them back to your best tolbunt roo. After doing this for about 5 generations you will get back to where you want to be. We've found that the gold laced eggs from our tolbunt pen have a much higher hatch rate. They still occasionally have some issues that are associated with the tolbunts. One had crooked toes and was culled early on, and spraddle leg is more prevalent with them. They also have a lower disease resistance than the rest of our polish.

What if you don't have tolbunt hens instead of roos?

Do you mean putting a gold laced roo over tolbunt hens? I'm not sure because I have no experience with that combination.
Eta: If all you have are hens I would try a GL roo and then take the best F1 roo back over them, then replace that F1 with the best F2, and so on. Its worth a try for several generations if you don't have a tolbunt roo.

I'm sorry, I didn't catch the typo. That should have read not have a tolbunt roo and have only tolbunt hens instead. I currently have three GL hens but it will be a while before I know the sex of my two tolbunt chicks. Of course I am hoping at least one is a roo.

I have a tolbunt frizzle rooster over a gold laced hen. I would like to find a tolbunt hen. I had bought one back in the winter and it died a few days after I got it.

This is one of the 4-H'ers she is talking about. We came all the way from Modesto, Ca! We are still in OR visiting family, but will be home Wed. I will post more pictures when I get back.

Hatchery based Polish are in most cases indeed leggy or skinny looking, but they can vary. Don't expect something full-bodied and beautiful from hatcheries. . . They breed for production only, so with that comes a small body that focuses only on egg production.

Now, don't get too scared off by this. I've got a Silver Laced with very nice legs. From a hatchery.

thank you Illia! I will go ahead and try them. I love the colors!

Thanks for the cute picture!! I appreciate the post.

I can't wait to show you more pics! Looks like we will be in Oregon another day. My cousin (who we are staying with) was in a bad horse accident and broke her back yesterday. My dad is watching the farm and we can't wait to get home. As soon as we do I will post more pics.
