That's a tough variety- not as bad as tolbunts but very difficult to breed anything that meets the standard and a small gene pool. I'm glad to see someone's working with them.

That's a pretty nice example too.

I'm always curious what genes play in BCW's. I know there are some birds out there with colors similar, but their bodies are usually gray.

Nice bird. I have some BCW's, my older hen has an almost pure white body (hard to do) but not as nice a crest. I have some young birds and two look like roo's with nice crests but a bit of grey in the chest, so hope the cross will give better crests and whiter bodies. Would take pics but hubby took camera to AZ on a hunting trip. When he gets back I'll post pics...

I went to a chicken swap on Saturday and told my daughter, "I am not bringing anything home, I'm going to sell plants."
Yep, found 2 polish babies to stick under the broody along with 2 speckled sussex. I have no willpower.
Did I mention my daughter wasn't even there to beg for new babies? Yep, her dad and I are chicken addicted.

The polish will be my daughter's for learning how to show at the fair, I think.
Just love those little poofed heads.

I'll be adding a couple polish gals to my flock soon, and had a question about wet crests in winter. I'm in the process of assembling a row of nipple waterers and a row of cup waterers. Do I still need to worry about trimming or pinning back their crests in winter? I keep reading about the fear of "wet heads" during the winter, which has me a little concerned considering I live in Oregon where it rains constantly 9-10 months out of the year. I have a large covered run but I let my girls free range most of the day. I'm planning on locking them in the run when we have freezing temps with access to a heat lamp or light bulb of some kind (heat lamps worry me around pine shavings), but do I still need to worry about their wet heads the rest of the time in the rain? Sorry such a newbie question, and thank you for any info you might have for me.

Actually I don't know the answer to your question but it was asked a couple pages ago so if you want to you can go back and see what they said there.

You're not alone.

I live in the wettest spot in the continental US and have a lot of Polish (breeder) and I deal with rain and muck all the time. . .

If you don't plan to show them, the best thing to do is clip the crest, preferably just the front. Like this -
