Poll. Shavings or straw in nesting bixes?

Pine shavings and a handfull of hay in each nest box, the girls do like to make a little "nest" with the hay - they love arranging it!

Pine shavings all the way...Nest boxes and floor. Easy to keep clean and no poo stuck to feet of chickens.

We use the FREE.. FREE...FREE...FREE mulch that comes from our township, they grind it up when they pick it up from the curb.

I use straw in their nesting boxes and under their perches. Of course, by the time they are done playing in it, it is all over their pen, and their nesting box is empty.

I also put DE in their nesting box and all over the dirt floor. So far, no bugs or any other critters.
