I really think any breed with the exception of Game Breeds would be fine for a beginner. Also it depends on if your looking for meat, eggs, show birds, or just a pet.

Howdy chicken oof, There are so many breeds that are good for beginners! I would just stay away from any of the breeds where the descriptions say they are flighty. I have a Golden Campine who is the sweetest little lady in the world but she can be flighty at times and I have to watch out for her! She has been known to want to fly in my face, LOL! I know she is only trying to land on my shoulder. I'll make my own personal suggestion to you about getting some Orpingtons. The Cochin is another friendly, calm and gentle breed.

Hello and welcome to BYC

I heard Orpingtons are really nice, friendly chickens and some of them are simply beautiful too. Have a look in the excellent Reviews section and the Breeds, Genetics, & Showing section to hear what the different breed's owners say about their chickens.

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. There are so many breeds that are great for beginners to pick from. My first chickens were Easter Eggers, friendly, pretty, and they lay beautiful eggs. Good luck

! Glad you joined us. I agree with Kevin565 and others - so much depends on what you intend to use them for. I mean, I personally like the colorful looks and personality of various brreds of roosters. But I also like eggs in the morning, so...
And then when I want to fry or roasat a chicken I get a Cornish X out of the freezer - but in my opinion, this is the only reason to have a Cornish X as they lack a lot of the character and liveliness I find appealing in other breeds. So, it's a toss up! But if they do what you want, don't cause you too many headaches, and give you pleasure - that's the right breed!
