Poll-Which are better mousers Male or Female cats

and would gum chipmunks and little critters to death.

Oh My! I just got a picture in my head and I thought of the old Tom and Jerry Cartoons

Female ferals who have raised a litter would win hands down in my book. I've had a few fixed ferals from feral cat fixing programs and usually, the females who have had a litter end up doing all the mousing and bringing the goods back to the colony to eat.. or to deposit on the human's door step. Most of these ferals don't want to be seen by us though, so it could be that the female ferals who have had kittens just show the humans they have goods while the boys just eat on their own.

Well....let's see...here are the cats I've owned in my lifetime...

Mouse = female....was not a good mouser
Trout & Sushi=both females...trout is an excellent mouser, Sushi, is not
Nelly (aka chubs) = female a so-so mouser. Shows interest but not that great.
Mrs Mew=female, had her about a year before she disappeared. Never saw her killl or get anything
Nigel=male, awesome mouser. But also will get rabbits, quail, birds and weasels!
Butters= male, good mouser. Not as dilligent as nigel
Gallagher=male (missing right now, please pray that he comes home), good mouser
If you keep the cats inside, they won’t go missing/get eaten

I've heard that if they don't learn to hunt from their mom's, they never learn...

With the cats I've had, the females have leaned towards being the best hunters-- our current cat brings home at least 2 lizards and doves a day (she usually keeps mice and baby rabbits for herself

I had a neutered male cat who didn't know what to do with mice, but was AMAZING with insects-- scorpions esp.

I'm sure breed has a factor, too. Our current cat who hunts everything is half bengal... she'll jump on my two year old son on occasion...

I can tell you that it is not necessary that kittens must learn to hunt from their mothers. I have a neutered male Ragdoll cat and he is an awesome hunter. Any mouse that gets in the house is a dead mouse in very short order. I don't know which is worse, the mice or Max charging through the house and pulling books out of the bookcase to get at them. Now I got Max from a breeder. Ragdolls are strictly indoor cats so his mother had no chance to hunt and he had no chance to learn from her. I had a screened porch. The mice would occassionally get on the porch and from there into the house.

Well I haven't had experience with mice, thank goodness, but I've owned four cats- Kristy (female) was great at catching lizards despite being declawed, and the one time a mouse was in the wall she heard it and tracked it around so we knew where to set the trap; Shadow (female) is good at catching flying bugs; Kibu (female) is an EXPERT bug hunter, especially roaches; Guaraha (male) was as dumb as a brick and the only thing he caught was his chew toy.

One of my parents' neighbors had a small female outdoor cat who was good at getting moles/voles and snakes.

Anyway my experience is biased because I've had more female cats than males :p.
