Pond for the girls?

I have an opportunity get pickup a 20 gallon 'pond' and was wondering if my girls even need it. I am new, and was thinking about the hot summers, wondering how they will cool themselves. They have plenty of shade and places for sand baths - will they need a pond? I am also concerned they might drown!!

If your "girls" are chickens and not ducks, you do not need a pond. They don't wade or swim. If they have access to plenty of shade and a breeze, they'll be fine. Some people put frozen milk jugs in the coops, or fans. I don't. I just make sure they can get in the shade and hope for a breeze.
