so what is the best way to remove the poo from their feet? Right now we have our young quail on wood chips and even though we clean it regularly it seem they still get poo on their feet.

If its dry and hard you'll just about have to squeeze it until the ball breaks, very carefully cause theres a tiny toe in there!

Ive heard of other methods. but this is precisely why I raise on wire.

If you don't have their water dish elevated so they can't walk in it, do that, it helps cut down poop feet.
Soak it in warm water repeatedly and gently try to break it apart.

Sometimes it will dry as hard as concrete. I've had to use pliers to crush it off their toes before.

It might take a week of working at it a little a day but it def needs to come off or they can get bumblefoot or gangrene.

Thanks for the advise. It didn't seem health to me. Just wasn't sure at what age I could put them on the wire. Anyway I made a wire enclosure over a pan and put each little guy (or gal) in for a few minutes and then carefully worked on poo removal. So far so go. Have almost all of it off every bird and they are now on wire.

I've found that when I turn my lamps off in the brooder boxes the poop doesn't dry out and sticks much worse. I now raise the lamps up enough to keep heat down but still dry out the poop and I vacuum it out every other day. Helps a great deal.
