Poop boards

I definitely want to do a poop board under my roosts. What do I need to keep in mind while designing and constructing them?

Recommended measurements front to back with roosts centered and height between roost and board. Would a 1 inch lip to contain sand work?

I have a 10x10 shed and I'm thinking about doing two complete sides with roost and poop board. All roosts at the same level.

I'll also attach the plans I drew up for my husband for critiquing. Keep in mind I'm not made of money and I already have the shed and the run. Not put in place yet but these are the dimensions I'm working with.

About 2/3 of the shed and the entire run will be in deep shade. The space behind the shed is slightly sloped so instead of flattening it out I figured I would use it as a storage area. I may want to increase the space behind the shed to make my life easier.

Feel free to ask questions for clarification and give me as many recommendations as possible! Thank you

When I saw my new favorite thing "poop boards," I had to read as I just installed mine about a month ago. Measurements I considered were of course about making sure enough space beyond each side of roost for chicken butt. Last thing you want is poop board to come up short and you have messy trim/lip or beyond. My trim is 2 inches and it holds in plenty of sand. My first roost bar is 10inches from the wall, 2nd roost is 8inches from 1st 2x4 roost. So my poop board starts flush on the wall and is 30 inches wide. I actually need to extend it about 2 more inches beyond 2nd roost because I had decided which way that chicken would be facing and that was silly, they face either way. If I was doing your config, I think your measurements are accurate where you show 18" wide poop board and I assume that's from a wall with roost bar in the middle, so 7" on each side of roost bar 2x4. 7" might mean poop on wall. Probably not but I take no chances after having poop walls for years. No way, it's to horrible. So you might think about coming out 8 or 9inches, up to you of course.

Just some random info...

I only have a ¾" lip on mine and keep about ¼" of material (stall fresh?) on it. I don't lose much to traffic, and it's a sufficient amount to do the job. I add a little every couple of weeks.

I reworked mine to support weight better since I didn't expect the chickens to walk on it (duh). I actually have 3 or 4 that roost on it now.

I fitted mine in place without fasteners so they could be easily removed for cleaning, but I've never had to take them out of the coop.

I recently raised the roost bar to 11" from the poop board so the girls that roost on the boards don't get pecked from above and have a bit more space, and I don't have any issues with splatter. The centre of the roost is about a foot from the wall, and the poop board is 18" deep.

This is what I did with my 10 x 10 shed. The first few feet are for storage but the back has a poop tray that is about 2 ft off the ground. I have the 2 roosts that are the same height. The space underneath the poop tray is open now but can be closed for a grow out area. To the left, are the nest boxes. I wish there was more floor space to make it easier for them to get down from the roosts.

I kept mine simple. 22” wide with the roost in the middle. No lip. No sand. Just plywood. I use a 4" puddy knife to scrape the poop off into a bucket.

Excellent!! You could put a bench to help with getting down. I just push it out of my way if I need to walk past.....
