My chicks are about 4-5 days old and they keep getting poop stuck in their feathers. Is this normal and how is the best way to clean them?

Is it pasty butt (poop stuck on their bottoms)? If that's the case, warm damp cloth. Wipe them off gently, and make sure they're warm and comfy. Or are they laying down on their poop?

I guess its the first, (pasty butt) but it doesn't wash off easily and I'm afraid I'm hurting them. And I'm worried that they are getting too cold.

One of the reasons is they're either too hot or too cold in the brooder, another is if they're eating the beddings. Just wipe them off very gently with warm moist cloth since sometimes they are crusty. It could block their vents if not taken care off. Make sure not to burn/ bruise their buns since it's very tender. I got a few of those every year then it will correct by itself as long as you monitor them. Good luck with your chicks

Pasty butt is caused from the Chicks getting chilled, possibly in transport or your brooder is cold?

Just use warm water and wipe butts off and apply Vaseline to each dirty chick....Check your temp at chick height.....

Good luck.......
