I have 6 lavender Orpington chicks - not sure how old, got them at farm store but have had them about a week. When tending to them this morning I noticed 2 have a decent amount of poop stuck to them. How do I remove it without hurting them?

You could carefully wash it off with a wash cloth.
What I like to do is to take small scissors.. like those storch shaped sewing scissors and cut it off. Of course you need to be careful not to cut them. But it keeps it from building up again. And it doesn't hurt them... it doesn't take as long as washing. So that means less stress. They don't miss those few feathers at all. Just cut as little as needed.

Take a moderately wet, warm water washcloth and hold it up to their bum. Gently massage the bum area with your thumb and fingers while holding the wet cloth to loosen and remove the fecal matter. Visually inspect their vent afterward to ensure that their vent is clean and empty. Left untreated, pasty butt, as this condition is often called, is life threatening.

I run a small stream of warm water and hold the chicks tush under it and let it get soft so it works off more easy. I have also used a wooden tooth pick to gently pick it off alternating between soaking their bottoms in a small saucer or lid full of warm water. after its off pat dry and take a q-tip and dot a little bit of Vaseline on the area so poop wont get stuck again. They dry and fluff back up pretty quick under the heat lamp.

Thanks I’ll give those a try. It certainly can’t be good or comfortable for them like they are.
It can actually kill them. It can harden where nothing can pass through so it's important to clean it. Make sure you don't pull to hard or rip it off like a band-aide or you can damage their delicate bottoms or God forbid pull the insides out.

I have a spray bottle with a natural cleaner(water works just as well and is what most recommend) and spritz a paper towel and the poop...Massage the poop to get it to break down, but NEVER pull on it. It can rip out feathers, which can lead to bleeding...It doesn't take long to break it down though. I watched YouTube videos myself because I was unsure how to handle it and I'm glad I did 💖

thank you for the advice - problem is presently taken care of & chicks seem to be doing fine.

Oh a spray bottle is a good idea - I’ll remember that if there are any more problems. Thanks
