Hey, I have a Rhode Island red chick who was hatched last tuesday and she is having a lot of trouble passing her feces out of her vent... it sounds like she is in a lot of pain and her vent is red and a little bit torn because the feces is so big.... what should I do?!

1) Trim any dried poop from around the vent area so it's nice & clean and the fluff won't stick to poop & glue vent area shut, and 2) put chick grit on the starter in your feeder (there is red chick grit & I recommend this b/c they can see it better), and 3) make sure there is plenty of water available (to help digestion). If her vent is torn you may want to isolate her from the other chicks (or at least most of them) until it has healed up, to prevent the others picking it & making it worse. Vent-picking can cause real damage, even death in chicks.
