Hello all,

My lavender orpington’s bottom looks like this. Is this typical for Orpingtons? Am I supposed to give her regular baths or am I doing something wrong? She lays regularly and behaves normally.

I had a chicken mysteriously pass this week with no sign of injury and I feel paranoid I am doing something wrong. Her bottom looked similar, however she was behaving normally and happy. I do not want any more chickens to pass due to my ignorance. Advice appreciated, I have owned chickens for about a year now and this has only become an issue in the last month or so.

Thanks so much!

Some hens are fluffier than others so may need to be cleaned up.

I'd give her a good wash up. If you wish, you can trim some of the fluff so she stays a bit cleaner.

While you are cleaning her up, check for lice/mites. If possible, take a sample of her poop to your vet to see if she needs deworming.

If she's active, eating/drinking, laying eggs, she sounds be to be fairly good condition.
