POOPY BUTT = MITES OMG

I would be interested to hear how folks safely & effectively dust their actual chickens with DE. I have heard warnings from other people about inhaling it. I try not to breathe it when I'm mixing it in the feed and when sprinkling it on the ground, and if ever I do it makes my nose & throat burn. When I dust my birds with Sevin there's always a good amount of flapping & thrashing involved, creating clouds of dust in the air. I think it's a good word of caution, especially for those who have never dusted their chickens before, to be extra extra careful if they're using DE.

Several months ago, I had to treat my free range flock for mites with poultry "dust," (pyrethrin/piperonyl.) Since then I have used de in the coop, and have dusted the birds/ vents and under their wings about every couple of months. I have not had a recurrence. I wear a mask.

Have (51) 7 week olds as well and am using it in their coop. No problems so far.

Certainly not scientific proof; I have had my hens less than a year. Just my experience.
