poor chickens!

I think you have a very easy fix for the run, if you want you can mount couble osp sheets on the front so it will creat big shade for them, you also can try to put one of the white tarp on top ( the tarp the landscapers use) then if it rains, water will not whigh the tarp down, ad white will help keep the temp down.

Good Luck.

What I've done for my 4 hens is wet the ground around their runs and mist inside the run a bit (they are still on grass until the big coop gets built), frozen water bottles if they want to drape, etc and in their water.
I also use white sheets draped over their runs and mist them with water so if a breeze does go by I hope it makes it cooler. The don't like it when I actually dampen the material but afterwards....

I also set up a sprinkler near their area and let it run for a bit. Often I'll move it to the other side and let it run.

Outside temp is pushing 100 and my hens are talking, no panting and producing (well the two that are laying).

Good luck.

Some ideas:

plant a row of tall sunflowers nearby to shade the coop from the worst of the sun.

Use a tarp or shade cloth like a dining canopy.

Make an arbor with lattice panel and plant grapes or whatever you want up it. Lattice gives some shade while plants are growing.

Lots of people have probably had this situation, so please let us know what you try and how it works out.

thank you for all your idears,
i think i am going to plant some trees in front of the walkway to the coop. they will take a bit to grow, but in the end hopefully it will be nicer for the chickens.
as for now, i am thinking about draping a white sheet over the front for more shade, although pretty as the sheers maybe, they are not giving a heck of alot of shade as i would like. thanks everyone for all your idears, they really helped out!!!!

thanks again!

In the meantime, can you run a garden hose sprinkler next to the coop, so that some mist will come in and cool them off. All my birds are free range, so they have lots of shade --- but they love it when the sprinkling system comes on! They won't go in the water, but they sure do stand by the side with their wings stretched out. Extra fun, freeze some jello and give it to them.
