Our almost mature rooster just died unexpectedly. I want to preserve his cape and saddle feathers. Do I need to cut his trachea and drain the blood immediately? Please help!

If he is dead, the blood will not drain well if at all. The trachea is for the movement of air in and out, not much blood there.

I have no advice in preservation of the cape and saddle feathers. However, there are people that harvest those feathers for fishing lures..maybe they will chime in.

Thank you for your repl Mrs. K. I just know that it is good practice to cut the air pipe of game animals to prevent spoiling and to cool the body down faster. Any information helps.

I would skin the hackle and saddle areas pronto.

There was guy on here long ago who did this,
not sure if he ever laid out just how to do it.
but it's not common on this website.

Could probably google to find out how.
