Bought Minkie home from the vets today, she is showing signs of improvement which is a huge relief. She is still unwell as she is sleepy and withdrawn but so far hasn't fallen or dropped forward onto her neck like she did before she went to the vets. She is 'talking' to me again with her little squeaks, drinking more and even managed some peas tonight. Bella, my other duck, is most relieved to have her home and loudly expressed her delight upon seeing her. I sat on the floor with them both and Minkie got on my knee and fell asleep in my arms for a bit which was very sweet, I'm so relieved I just hope she continues to improve. Tomorrow has its own challenges as the vet has given me some liquid medicine and I have to give her 10ml every day, having never given a duck medicine I'm not sure how this will pan out but will have a go!

Did he show you how to do this? you have to do it slowly to keep from pushing it into their lungs. Maybe you could ask the vet if you could mix it into bread or something else she really likes that you know she would eat.

I had been wondering about this myself, the only thing she really likes are peas, especially as she is feeling off at the minute. I though about mashing some of the peas and putting the liquid on this but if she doesn't eat it all how will i know how much she has had? I can try with the syringe and do it really slowly and see how i get on?

Try wrapping her in a towel so that she can't flap. When I have to give oral medication (has been tablets only in my case) I kind of kneel on the floor with one knee raised (left knee as I am right handed) and I sit the duck on the raised knee facing the front. With my left arm/elbow I hold the duck to myself and then with my left hand I hold the duck's upper bill. I administer the medication with my right hand. You kind of have to prise the bill open, but once it's open you can get a firm grip on the upper bill (makes a good handle). Then put the end of the syringe at the back of their tongue and slowly squeeze out the liquid. Just try not to squirt it out in a jet.

Incidentally, when you are giving a tablet you have to poke it down their throat, past the back of the tongue, otherwise they spit it out. They are expert at spitting out what they don't want, while swallowing what they do want - their whole mouth is designed to do that. First time I gave a tablet I thought I'd be clever and put the tablet in one pea, in with a big handful of un-medicated peas. The duck hoovered up the lot and then spat out one pea - the one with the tablet.

Mmm, I'm thinking this may happen with my pea plan! Little monkies!
Thanks for the advice, I will try tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
