Pop bottle waterer for hens?

Hi all,
I just wanted to post a little update on my waterers. I have the plastic ones (with the spring) and have been using them for 2 years now. However, 2-liter bottles really don't work with them - they're too fat. But tall, skinny bottles work well - 1 to 1.5 liter bottles. Usually the high end brands of bottled water (esp. that you find in health food stores) have these. Each waterer rests on an 18" length of PVC pipe to keep them level and the bottles are held in place with a bungee cord.

If you have freezing weather in the winter, you need to check them every so often to make sure the water in the resevoir and at the bottle opening hasn't frozen. I usually bring a pitcher of hot water with me to melt the ice and add to the bottles.

I really need to replace them, and I'm going to try the aluminum ones that Lollypop suggested from Cutler Supply.

I use those for all of my chickens (don't work for ducks or geese) in the winter time. I LOVE them for that just because they don't spill much, I can swap out frozen ones for thawed very quickly, too. I don't use them in the summer because they drink A LOT more water and would soon run out.

Do you have to mount this to anything? And, how often do you clean it? Thanks.

I have hardware cloth on the doors of my coops. I cut a little hole for the drinker part & they come with springs. I change out the pop / water bottles about once a week, sometimes sooner if they get algae that starts to grow in them...I just rinse out the actual plastic part every time I fill them.

Hmmm. . .**scratches head** so could the bottle be mounted on the outside and they drink from the inside? I am just picturing my three year old locking me in the chicken coop as I crawled in to hang it.

That could be ugly.

Yes, that's the way I use mine...
