popadom hello

I just put my sand right on top of the dirt. Nothing in between. Clean up any wood chips or shavings so the sand will stay drier. And use at least 4 inches of sand as they are going to scratch around and dig thru it. As deep as you can afford....4 to 6 inches is best. I only have about 4 inches in my coop and run. Occasionally they do dig down to the dirt, but I just rebury it.

My husband said to me ....does this mean an end to our holidays ??? Somebody needs to let them in and out every day

You can use an automatic coop door, there are reviews for some on the Reviews section https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/automatic-coop-doors or if your run is totally secure you can just leave the coop door open. But it is generally best to have someone check the chickens at least once a day if you are gone to be sure everything is well and if you have to collect eggs. Most people seem to find a neighbor or friend/relative etc to do it for them, often in exchange for the eggs.

What time are people opening the coop of a morning and putting them to bed ? I think I need to get more of a regular time and stick to it ? Thanks

I go out at dusk and get everybody in the coop as I don't want to mess with birds in the dark. And then in the morning as soon as it is light enough that they are awake, I get out there and open up the coop. I try to stick to the time of the sun up and down so they fell comfortable in a routine. Birds love routine and are less stressed when they know when things are going to happen. :-)

I know they get up early but what time ????? Do you do it

Welcome from the Ocean State! I use an automatic door with a photo sensor so it opens at sunrise and closes at sunset.
